چکیده

Let G be a linear algebraic group defined over a field k. We prove that, under mild assumptions on k and G, there exists a finite k-subgroup S of G such that the natural map H(K,S) −→ H(K,G) is surjective for every field extension K/k. We give two applications of this result in the case where k an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero and K/k is finitely generated. First we show that for every α ∈ H(K,G) there exists an abelian field extension L/K such that αL ∈ H (L,G) is represented by a G-torsor over a projective variety. In particular, we prove that αL has trivial point obstruction. As a second application of our main theorem, we show that a (strong) variant of the algebraic form of Hilbert’s 13th problem implies that the maximal abelian extension of K has cohomological dimension ≤ 1. The last assertion, if true, would prove conjectures of Bogomolov and Königsmann, answer a question of Tits and establish an important case of Serre’s Conjecture II for the group E8.

On component extensions locally compact abelian groups

Let $pounds$ be the category of locally compact abelian groups and $A,Cin pounds$. In this paper, we define component extensions of $A$ by $C$ and show that the set of all component extensions of $A$ by $C$ forms a subgroup of $Ext(C,A)$ whenever $A$ is a connected group. We establish conditions under which the component extensions split and determine LCA groups which are component projective. ...

Generic Picard-vessiot Extensions for Non-connected Groups

Abstract. Let K be a differential field with algebraically closed field of constants C and G a linear algebraic group over C. We provide a characterization of the K-irreducible G-torsors for nonconnected groups G in terms of the first Galois cohomology H(K, G) and use it to construct Picard-Vessiot extensions which correspond to non-trivial torsors for the infinite quaternion group, the infinit...

Pre-torsors and Equivalences

Properties of (most general) non-commutative torsors or A-B torsors are analysed. Starting with pre-torsors it is shown that they are equivalent to a certain class of Galois extensions of algebras by corings. It is then concluded that every faithfully flat unital pre-torsor admits a (left and right) flat (bimodule) connection. It is shown that a class of faithfully flat pre-torsors induces equi...

Homotopy Classification of Categorical Torsors

The long-known results of Schreier on group extensions are here raised to a categorical level by giving a factor set theory for torsors under a categorical group (G,⊗) over a small category B. We show a natural bijection between the set of equivalence classes of such torsors and [B(B),B(G,⊗)], the set of homotopy classes of continuous maps between the corresponding classifying spaces. These res...

Simplicial Torsors

The interpretation by Duskin and Glenn of abelian sheaf cohomology as connected components of a category of torsors is extended to homotopy classes. This is simultaneously an extension of Verdier’s version of Čech cohomology to homotopy.
